What is Body Composition Analysis?

Body composition analysis goes far beyond the number on the scale. It provides a detailed breakdown of your body tissues — including fat, muscle, bone, and water — to give a clearer picture of your overall health.

This advanced assessment is a valuable tool for creating personalised nutrition, fitness, and weight management plans, making it far more precise than weight or BMI alone.

Why is it important?

More accurate than body weight alone – reveals if you have a healthy balance of muscle and fat
Supports weight loss safely – distinguishes fat loss from muscle loss, ensuring lean muscle is preserved (especially important for patients using new weight loss medications)
Identifies health risks early – detects excess body fat and visceral fat (fat around internal organs), which is strongly linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer
Encourages prevention – highlights risks before symptoms appear, giving you the opportunity to make lifestyle changes that protect your long-term health

Who is it for?

  • Anyone wanting a more complete health check

  • Patients undergoing weight loss treatment or using weight loss medications

  • People aiming to improve fitness or build muscle

  • Those interested in chronic disease prevention and management

Body Composition Analysis During Menopause

Hormonal changes during menopause can significantly impact body composition. Many women experience an increase in fat mass, a decrease in muscle mass, and a change in how fat is distributed around the body. These shifts can make weight management more challenging, even with a healthy lifestyle.

A baseline body composition analysis can be extremely valuable for women entering or going through menopause. By tracking changes over the menopausal years and beyond, this assessment helps ensure that health and fitness strategies remain effective and tailored to the body’s needs during this transition.

Benefits of body composition analysis during menopause include:
✔ Identifying early changes in fat and muscle distribution
✔ Supporting weight control strategies that preserve lean muscle mass
✔ Guiding personalised nutrition and fitness plans to maintain energy and vitality
✔ Reducing the risk of menopause-related health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and metabolic changes

By monitoring body composition regularly, women can take a proactive approach to their health, maintaining strength, balance, and confidence during this crucial stage of life.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA): Uses low level electrical currents to estimate the different components of fat, muscle, and bone mass and provides detailed information about these tissues. The state-of-the-art device measuring body composition with BIA is a Tanita DC430MA analyzer.

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry): Provides detailed images of body composition. DEXA is a medical imaging technique that uses two X-ray beams to measure the density of bone, fat, and lean tissue in the body. It is considered one of the most accurate and reliable methods for assessing body composition, including body fat percentage. The other benefit of the DEXA scans is that they are considered the gold standard for bone density analysis – detecting thinning bones referred to as osteopenia and osteoporosis where there is an increased risk of fracture with minimal trauma injuries.

If you are about to embark on a fitness or weight-loss program a body composition scan may be useful to assess and show the distribution of your body fat and soft tissue. The information from your body composition analysis report provides you with the information you need to help you achieve your goals for weight control & nutritional & fitness health management.
